Nature walks

The Meuse and the bordering Maesbempdergreend–Mazenhoven nature reserve form the backbone of this walking area with stately Vilain XIIII castle at the heart. The giant trees, unique in both size and type, and stately lanes transport you back to the age of chivalry. The combination of culture and nature makes this area a treasure to explore on foot.

The red and orange routes in the Leut walking area take you along the Maesbempdergreend and Mazenhoven nature reserve. You can freely wander off-trail through these areas but make sure to keep a safe distance from the grazers who also appreciate the peace and quiet.

The red and yellow routes in the Leut walking area take you through the Maaswinkel area in Belgium.

Cultural walks

Go on a historical and cultural journey of discovery and explore the many monuments of the area, the extensive English park, and the connecting river forelands in Leut and Mazenhoven. The 'Leut and Meeswijk: fun facts to know’ cultural brochure will show you the way.

Nature and landscape

Maesbempdergreend / Mazenhoven

The old gravel lake is located in the centre of the Maesbempdergreend area and is enfolded in an old riverbed of the Meuse. It connects seamlessly to the Mazenhoven area. You can find numerous local herbs such as the small teasel, common meadow-rue, and oregano (wild marjoram) in the river forelands along the lake and in the Mazenhoven area. While the area may look wild and untamed it has a significant ecological value.
