Roosteren

Roosteren lies west of Echt-Susteren and is separated from Belgium by the Meuse. Roosteren is a small but complete village with quaint neighbourhoods and lush vegetation, and all amenities can be found within walking distance. In the past, the name Roosteren appeared as Rosusteren, Rufsusteren, Rustren, Roesten, Roesteren, Rosteren, and Roisterad. It is a combination of the words Rode (red) and Suestra (the old name for Susteren). Roosteren was founded at the confluence of the Roode Beek and the Geleenbeek rivers and is likely to have been an early eighth century extension of the Susteren abbey.

Walking and cycling

Fietsen in Echt-Susteren

The walking routes network in Echt-Susteren stretches more than 270 km. You can take a relaxing walk from junction to junction and explore this wonderful municipality. This junction system is similar to the network of cycling routes that has been successfully operational for many years. This system has a network structure that creates junctions at all the points where two or more routes connect or cross. Walkers can then choose at each of these 254 junctions in which direction they would like to continue. This allows people to walk from junction to junction and plan their own direction and walking distance. It also allows people to adjust their route during walks. The network consists of a series of connecting loops that vary in distance and can be followed in two different directions. The advantage of this is that you can start from any junction. The distances to the next junctions are indicated on each junction post.

This network of walking routes contains eleven starting points, including Roosteren. An information board that gives further information about each of the walking routes is placed at each of the starting points. The routes differentiate between paved trails, unpaved trails, and hiking paths through marshy areas. The QR code that can be scanned at the starting points with your smartphone shows the walking routes and gives extra information about the different interesting sites in the area. You can find the map of walking routes at the online shop of the South Limburg tourist information office or at one of the VVV tourist information offices including tourist information office VVV Servicepunt Echt, De Domijnen Cultureel Centrum, de Plats 1.
