Alongside the river Meuse there are a number of characteristic and atmospheric villages. Each has its own character and its own 'must-sees'. Let them surprise you!

Cultural hikes

As of 1 july you can explore five of these Meuse villages using the FARO ErfgoedApp (Heritage App). In this free app you will then find a new heritage walk in the villages of Kessenich, Aldeneik, Stokkem, Leut and Oud-Rekem. These tours take you along the most remarkable historical buildings or places. By means of animations, spoken texts or historic images, you will get a unique insight into the history of these villages. Altogether, these walks shed light on more than 42 monuments in the Maasvalley River Park.

The Erfgoedapp (Heritage App) of FARO (support centre for cultural heritage in Flanders) is a free app that is used in many museums and city centres to unlock heritage. You can read short texts, scroll through old postcards, hear stories being told or play videos about the area. If you have installed the Erfgoedapp, you will also receive a notification when you are in the vicinity of one of the described monuments.

These heritage walks are a revised version of the so-called 'culture brochures' of the Meuse Valley River Park. These brochures are no longer available.

How to start?

Does hiking based on an app on your phone sound a bit strange and you don't know how to start? We will help you on your way:

  1. Download the ErfgoedApp on your smartphone (via App Store or Google Play)
  2. Open the app, click on the compass symbol and download a tour of your choice:
    1. Heritage walk Kessenich
    2. Heritage walk Aldeneik
    3. Heritage walk Stokkem
    4. Heritage walk Leut
    5. Heritage walk Old-Rekem
  3. Open the map and go exploring! Be sure to take your camera at the HeritageApp signposts that you will encounter along the way.
Tip: Download the desired route at home before you set off. This way you will use less battery and you will have less chance of interference by a bad network connection.

Need more help?

Just drop by the tourist information office of the municipality where you want to explore the heritage walk. They will be happy to give you some extra information. You can also get a free map of the route.
