Elen (Dilsen - Stokkem)

About this starting point

Gravel extraction in the area created several beautiful lakes such as Meerheuvel and Bichterweerd. Bichterweerd has become a paradise for a number of waders and other unique waterbirds. Gravel extraction activities will start in Elerweerd in the next few years. The landscape will undergo a transformation that is focused on developing new natural environments.

Walk along the banks of the Meuse by following the yellow, blue, and green routes. The yellow and blue routes show you a little of Bichterweerd. A swing gate provides access to the area where you are free to wander off-trail.

The orange route crosses over the motorway and you are immediately aware that you are entering a landscape that is characteristic of the Kempen natural landscape. De Broeken is an old peat extraction area where a 150-metre boardwalk allows you to walk across the water.

The walking route network between Kempen and Broek very nearly connects to the Elen walking area here. The orange route connects to the Tösch-Langeren walking area through a short connecting trail that is indicated with brown crosses on the map.
