The ecological research ‘Maas in Beeld’ was conducted on both banks of the river Meuse – the part where the river is the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. After large scale river restoration combined with gravel extraction and nature development, this research shows that over the last 10 years, the natural area doubled, the area of Natura2000 protected habitat tripled, the number of insect species doubled, the vegetation diversity tripled, and the number of visitors to this new nature, increased tenfold.
