About the village

Konikpaarden in Roosteren

The centre of Roosteren is located to the west of Echt-Susteren and is only separated from Belgium by the Meuse. The name Roosteren used to appear as: Rosusteren, Rufsusteren, Rustren, Roesten en Roesteren, Rosteren and Roisterad. It is a fusion of ‘Rode’ and ‘Suestra’. Roosteren came about at the confluence of the ‘Roode Beek’ and the ‘Geleenbeek’, and is probably a reclamation from the Abbey of Susteren in the early 8th century.

In Roosteren, you will find yourself in the narrowest part of the Netherlands (municipality of Echt-Susteren) … literally. Within one hour, you can walk from Belgium, through Roosteren to Germany. This region is also a must by bike. Echt-Susteren is a green base for anyone who really wants to get to know Limburg and Europe. From the Cathedral of Aachen, on your bike to Maaseik for a beer on the market square, then onto the ‘Vrijthof’ in Maastricht, you're there in no time at all.
